The Legacy of Heorot is a science-fiction novel written by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Steven Barnes and published in 1987. It was followed by a sequel, Beowulf's Children, in 1995.[1]

SYNOPSIS

The novel's title is a reference to the meadhall that was attacked by Grendel in the epic poem Beowulf. The novel itself is a very loose adaption of the original Beowulf, set in the future and interpreted through the lens of sciences fiction. The plot deals with shipload of colonists arriving on Avalon, fourth planet of Tau Ceti, and their attempts to settle the deceptively innocuous landscape. The novel's reluctant protagonist, Cadmann Weyland, fills the role of Beowulf, using skills and knowledge that only he possesses to save the colonists from the dangers of Avalon, and from themselves.
