Baedeker, frequently only referred to as the Hindmost. is a deposed Hindmost of the Fleet of Worlds and mate to Nessus.[1]

Baedeker is a renowned scientist and has repeatedly showed un-Citizen-like aptitude for calm during emergencies.[1] Despite being forced by Nessus to mating with him with the threat of ruining his plans for the First Ringworld Expedition[2] he comes to love him. He has two children with Nessus.[1]

Baedeker regularly changes the style and color of his mane, usually sporting elaborately done hairstyles, with assortments of different jewels. He seems to specially take care to impress aliens, going so far as to paint his claws and brush the short fine hair over the rest of his body till it shines.[1]

Hindmost, elected from the Experimentalist faction, at the time the Fleet of Worlds starts its journey to the Magellan Clouds, he is eventually deposed and exiled after a series of mishaps, including his meddling in Human and Kzinti breeding, its eventual discovery by Louis Wu and Chmeee, who made up the First Ringworld Expedition, and mating with Nessus.[1]

After this he devises a plan to regain his position by kidnapping Louis Wu and Chmee and organizing the Second Ringworld Expedition in search of the mythic cheap transmuter used by the Engineers to create the Ringworld.[1]

The plot does not go according to plan and Baedeker is forced to suffer through Louis Wu's continual betrayals and scheming, eventually having to give up control of the expedition to him and be forced under his command. Despite all the setbacks, including the revelation that the transmuter he sought never existed, Baedeker becomes key in the plan to save the Ringworld which despite incredible resistance and danger succeeds, for which Louis Wu congratulates him.[1]

With his original plan torn asunder Baedeker takes up residence in the Map-of-Mars aboard Hot Neeedle of Inquiry where he believes he will be most safe in the Ringworld after losing hope of ever returning to the Puppeteer homeworld.[1]

A Citizen named Baedeker by Nessus served as an engineer with the General Products Corporation as operated near the Fleet of Worlds when the Ship Explorer was being retrofitted. [3] Unsure if this is the same Citizen that would serve as Hindmost during the Second Ringworld Expedition.
